How to Apply Powder Coating: A Step-by-Step Guide

Proper powder coating application starts long before the powder touches the workpiece. Pre-treatment is the most critical stage: the surface must be free of oil, rust, and contaminants. Degreasing plus sandblasting or phosphating determines long-term coating adhesion.

Next comes electrostatic application. The powder is electrically charged through the spray gun and adheres to the grounded workpiece. Ideal film thickness is generally 60–100 microns — maintained through consistent voltage, air pressure, and spray distance.

After spraying, the part enters a curing oven at 160–200°C for 10–20 minutes. The powder melts, flows, and cross-links into a hard layer that fuses perfectly with the surface.

Quality control at the end covers film thickness tests, adhesion tests, and visual inspection. A good result means an even layer with no orange peel, pinholes, or under-cured areas.
